1st Fix Carpentry and Joinery
The structural timber work behind the plaster: joists, studwork, roof timbers and linings, set out square.
2nd Fix Carpentry
Second fix carpentry is the joinery you see and touch once the plastering is done: doors hung, skirting and architrave fitted, staircase parts, and fitted joinery. V&M Home Extensions carry out second fix carpentry across the Norfolk and Suffolk border from a base in Brandon.

The work
Second fix is the part of a build people judge. Nobody inspects the joists. Everybody notices a door that catches on the carpet, an architrave with a gap at the mitre, or skirting that waves along a wall because it was pushed on rather than scribed to it.
It is finishing work, and it rewards patience more than speed. Hanging a door properly means easing the lining, setting the hinges so the door sits central in the frame and closes onto the stop without slamming. Mitres want cutting to the angle the corner actually is, not the angle it is supposed to be.
Real job
An old balustrade removed and floorboards lifted, then a new balustrade in painted spindles under an oak capped handrail, with the landing floored and finished.

Questions
Straight answers. Where something depends on your property, we say so rather than guessing.
Yes, and it is one of the most cost effective changes you can make to a hallway. The strings and treads usually stay, and the handrail, spindles and newel posts are replaced. It changes the character of the landing and the stairwell completely without the disruption of a full staircase replacement.
